Custom Photography, Part 2: Why Choose Custom Photography?

February 17th, 2012

Last week I started a series about Custom Photography with Part 1: What is Custom Photography. This week, I’d like to talk a bit more in depth about why clients choose custom photography.

Custom photography is more of a luxury than your entry level cookie cutter chain experience.  Custom photography truly is not for everyone, it requires a level of commitment, investment in time  and money, forethought and planning on the part of the subject/client and requires a larger time commitment for the photographer as well.

Clients who enjoy taking a more active role in the creation of their families’ memories have the desire to have portrait art that is truly personalized.  These more discerning clients have been known to budget and allot time for a custom photography session.  Many clients opt for it to be a once a year special experience, some opt to have custom photography sessions done to record their child’s stages in life.  Having said this, it is clear that custom photography is not in everyone’s budget,  it is something that most families save for to splurge on from time to time to memorialize their children as they really are  (not posed and primped in the cookie cutter studio setting).

There is a great deal of time involved in creating high end custom photography sessions for a client.  The luxury of great service, better choices and a superb end product.  The result of all this are heirloom quality images.  The time invested at the session is only a small portion of time involved in this process (more on this in part 3).

Custom photography has been likened to purchasing a fine vehicle.  To get to point B from A let’s face it, even a bus ride would suffice.  If you want to luxuriate in a finely appointed vehicle, customizing your own experience by listening to smooth jazz while sitting in a climate controlled setting adjusted purely for your comfort in a body hugging leather interior, perhaps that Lexus you so desire is your cup of tea.  Custom photography is much the same cup of tea.  It is the Lexus of the photography world.  It is where the intangibles make the experience truly wonderful and the images themselves make the investment of money and time truly worthwhile.

Custom photography can be broken down into even more levels.  There are on location, studio, mixed studio/on location, specialty location and destination type photographers.  The beauty of custom photography is in the choices and in the luxury of thoses options.  The customized service level you are sure to experience will be amazing.  The knowledge that your final images are the result of someone caring about those moments so much that they take extra time ensuring that the artwork you receive is good enough to stand by with their name on it.  That level of quality and commitment  is all but lost in the age of “mass produced,” “mass marketed,” corporate “everyone is a number”.  Custom photography is based on being unique to you.  How great an experience would be,  to be able to sit back and allow a photographer to do this highly custom work for images that you will most likely cherish for a lifetime?

Keep in mind more than anything that the Lexus will never appreciate in value the way your portraits will.  The portrait art you become invested in from your custom photographer will no doubt increase in value and become more priceless as the years pass.

Next, Part 3: Why Does Custom Photography Cost More? This is where I will go into depth regarding the cost and value of custom photography.

XOXO,

Melisa

6 Days New // San Diego Newborn Photographer

February 16th, 2012

Sweet little Matthew really wasn’t too sure about being nakers and was perfectly happy in moms arms, nursing away. As with many newborns, it just takes a little time and patience. He decided that it would be best to be wrapped up most of the time, so that’s just what we did!

Thank you for being such awesome clients! Congratulations on your precious new little boy.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Cogdell Photography!

February 14th, 2012

One year ago today my husband asked me to marry him…which, by the way, was a TOTAL surprise! We had only been dating for a little over a year, but we were both on top of the world in love with each other. So, he just went for it! And I’m so glad he did!! Also, because their is a child involved, we had to think of her too, not just us. So it was important to make our relationship official in order to set a good example for her. And of course, the most important, because we were in LOVE and we wanted to! I wouldn’t change the whirl wind of this last year for anything. So this day will always mean much more to me than the celebration of love, it’s the celebration of OUR love, and it signifies the beginning of our life together. Without my husband, I would be a very different person. He has changed me. His daughter has changed me. I don’t get to just think of myself anymore. After 32 years of doing just that, I was ready to give myself to my husband, my step daughter, and our new life together. I can’t thank him enough for showing me what LOVE really is. He is my life, my everything.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day…

This year Ayz & I did a very fun Valentine’s Day project. Really, you could make these “wax paper stained glass” hearts into anything you want. I originally saw a video on You Tube showing how to make them for a pretty card. This is my version…

Stained Glass Crayon & Wax Paper Hearts

Shave pink & red crayons into a little bowl.
Put a layer of paper towel, then a layer of wax paper.
Evenly spread the crayons.
Add another layer of wax paper, then a paper towel.
Use iron on low, carefully iron pushing the crayons to flatten. Wipe iron down if crayons soak through.
Wait till its cool, and mark with a pencil your heart shapes (cheat with a cookie cutter).
Cut out hearts.

Custom Photography, Part 1: What is Custom Photography?

February 10th, 2012

With hopes to better inform my clients and readers about what custom photography is, I have decided to launch a three part series about this subject. I will address the “what”, the “why”, and the biggest one – the “cost”. I will explore, explain, and hopefully educate you in the process. I’ve waited a long time to approach this subject, because frankly it isn’t easily explained in a matter of a few sentences. I have little blurbs here and there on my site and blog about custom photography, however I feel its time to finally create a resource that not only my clients will hopefully enjoy and learn from, but also for other photographers.

What is Custom Photography?

Art. But custom photography is not just art, it’s an heirloom which you will cherish for a lifetime and pass down to your kids, and them to their kids, and so on. Custom photography is created with this purpose in mind. Custom photography is a collaborative effort between photographer and client, in which the photographer is able to capture and bring to life those once-in-a-life-time fleeting moments that pass in an instant, and are forever frozen as a beautiful image that you can hang on your wall. THAT is art. Heirloom art. It should make you smile, laugh, and even cry. It should bring you back to that moment and make your heart sing. The photographic art you choose to place on your wall is ultimately the result of the vision of the photographer. This vision, coupled with what you wear to your session, the environment, the lighting, even the mood the subjects are in at the time of photographing creates the work that you will want to proudly display on your walls forevermore.

A lot of people assume this is a wedding portrait when they see this. Although she is wearing white and they are dressed up in wedding-like attire, it is actually from a 5 year anniversary portrait session. From this particular lifestyle session, I have lots of favorites, but there’s just something about this image that makes me squeal with delight when I see it. Maybe its the “almost kiss”, the sun peeking through, their hands, the tenderness…and of course all the bonus stuff – their attire, the setting, and they are gorgeous people. But what is most important about this? The client LOVED it, and it made their hearts sing! It represents exactly how they were feeling at that moment and drips with their love for each other.

So you’re ready for custom photography? Your first step in the process is more about determining who you are, who your family is and then seeking a photographer that reflects your style. For instance let’s say your family is very urban, colorful, funky little fashionistas! You start determining what style you like, browse through photography website portfolios and determine if any of the styles exhibited there would be a good fit with your life and family style. You have already determined that you should probably seek out a edgy type photographer and then begin narrowing the field down a bit.

Finally after a bit of internet research, you have narrowed it down to two photographers who do what seems like solid work, the sort of edgy, urban look you desire.  It is now time to ask yourself: Do you like photographer A’s style over photographer B’s style? Is it because the people in the images of A’s style are having a great time and it seems very caught up in the moment vs. B photographer more posed, looking in the camera images? If this is a case, you probably like LIFESTYLE photography or perhaps even take it a step further and define your desired style as a PHOTOJOURNALISTIC photography style. The photographer you probably should choose is photographer A because their style is very similar to the style you desire.

What custom photography ultimately is all about is choice and experience. Custom photography is about finding someone who will photograph your family, give you devoted 1:1 attention without worry of who is next ‘in line’ or the feeling of a crowded portrait studio.

  • A custom photographer will typically show you a fairly extensive gallery culled to only show the good images that meet the photographers’ creative sensibilities.
  • Often the images are fully edited images-color corrected with blemishes and stray hairs removed, with artistic and black and white options as well.
  • Custom photographers are also known as boutique studios, offering a range of products and unparalleled service. Think Lexus vs. Hyundai, think Nordstrom vs. WalMart.

A custom photography experience should have you, the client and your experience in mind.

Next, Part 2: Why Choose Custom Photography. This is where I will go into depth about the subject and the value that’s attached to it.

XOXO,

Melisa

Even with a sick kiddo and a few sick adults, this crew made it through an adventurous session with only a few bribes and break downs. (suckers I keep hidden in my camera bag came in very handy!) Thanks guys for tromping around in the squishiness (in heels!), thanks for enduring the bugs and runny noses, and thanks for being such good sports!

You may remember this family from a few recent shoots. Like the Tennessee Session, or Gail & Dane just because session, or the kiddos!

February Recipe // Double Chocolate Raspberry Pavlova

February 2nd, 2012

This months recipe is in the spirit of this month’s holiday – Valentine’s Day! This is a delightfully unique dessert that is sure to delight your loved ones!!

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I really don’t like to bake. And even though I get into the holiday spirit with a baking day once a year in December, its really not my favorite thing. After 8 years working in a bakery, one can understand why. But this dessert was unlike any I’d ever baked before, so I thought I’d give it a try. It was a big hit in my house, so hopefully it is in yours too!

Double Chocolate Raspberry Pavlova

6 x Egg Whites
300g Caster sugar (Australian Recipe!! = Caster sugar is fine baking sugar = 20-21 Tablespoons or 1.3+ cups)
3 x tablespoons Belgian cocoa powder
1 x tablespoon good balsamic vinegar
50g good quality chocolate (70% cocoa solids), chopped into small pieces (just get a bar of good chocolate, sometimes it does have the grams measurements on the package)
3 punnets of fresh raspberries (3 of those green “baskets”)
500ml whipping cream, whipped and sweetened with a tablespoon of caster sugar (1 pint or 2 cups)

Preheat oven to 180˚C / 350 F

1. Place egg whites in the bowl of a mixer (I use a Kitchen Aid, find it excellent for meringues) and whisk until soft peaks form.

2. Using a tablespoon at a time, add sugar into egg white mixture and continue beating until the egg whites become stiff and glossy. Be careful not to over-beat as it can start to separate. The mixture is ready once it forms stiff, glossy peaks and you can hold the bowl upside down without any of it falling out. (I don’t normally test the latter as I’m familiar with meringue consistence but if you’ve never made one before, it’s worth giving it a try, once it stays put, you know you’re good to go.

3. Sift in the cocoa powder, add the vinegar and chopped up chocolate, using a large spoon slowly and carefully fold these into the egg white and sugar mixture until fully combined. the mixture will resemble a very light brown shade.

4. Line 2 large, flat oven trays with baking parchment – I find it a good tip to dab a little bit of the pavlova mixture underneath each corner of the paper as it helps it stick to the tray and avoids the paper slipping all over the place whilst you are loading on the mixture = very annoying..

5. Place a 9″ or 10″ dinnerplate on the middle of each tray and draw firmly around the edge with a pencil or pen to form a circle – this will act as a guide and ensure both pavlovas are the same size. Flip the paper over so the ink/pencil lead is touching the tray side as opposed to the pavlova side, you’ll still be able to see the line through the paper.

6. Load up each circle with the mixture, smoothing it out to the edge of the line you have just drawn, try to divide the mix equally so both have same volume of mix. I normally smooth out the mixture, but a Pavlova is not supposed to look perfect so feel free to form a few points and peaks if you want, when cooked they’ll crisp up and add a bit more interest visually.

7. Place in oven and immediately reduce heat to 140˚C (280 F). Cook for 1hr to 1hr15mins. Do not open the oven door whilst the pavlova is cooking.

8. You’ll know when the pavlova is cooked when it looks crisp at the edges which will have started to crack slightly. The top will be dry but if you press on the underside it’ll give a little as the centre should be still a little squishy/soft. Place the pavlova back in the oven and leave the door slightly ajar, leave the pavolva to cool completely inside.

9. When it is cool, I place one disc on a serving platter or cake stand and spoon a big wallop of cream on top, scatter a good handful of fresh raspberries onto the cream and then place the second meringue disc on top. Again pile on a good amount of cream and the remainder of the raspberries. Sprinkle with finely chopped chocolate and serve.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Back to School Session // San Diego Lifestyle Photographer

January 31st, 2012

Yes, you read right…”Back to School Session”!! Ok, so its only taken several months to get this post up! That’s usually the way things go with photographers and their personal images. We somehow manage to neglect our own photos, putting off the editing, putting off the printing, etc. This year, I’ve made a promise to try and be more on top of my personal images! So with that, here is my lovely stepdaughter! A little girl that has blossomed into a young lady practically overnight! No, she’s not wearing my clothes. Yes, she is almost as tall as me. Yes, thankfully she still isn’t into boys…yet! Yes, she’s stunning, and could be a little model! Here she is…

My love for this child grows everyday. There is no harder job on the planet than being a step parent. We are often over looked, pushed aside, not taken seriously, and not thought of as a “real parent”. We are under-appreciated and overworked. But WE know that the job we’re doing isn’t one that we have to do. Instead, we do it because we want to. We took on the role with full knowledge of how hard it would be, and we do it anyway. To all you step parents out there…CHEERS!
